Julie London
was one of the top female vocalists in the 50’s and early 60’s. She is perhaps best known for her work on the TV show "Emergency". Her beauty and sex appeal somewhat eclipsing her musicianship. She recorded 31 albums in approximately 10 years with her most successful hit "Cry Me A River" remaining on the Billboard charts for 13 weeks. Her voice has been described as intimate, sultry and oversmoked. I love her warm but playful tone and her phrasing. She worked well with simple bass and guitar accompaniment. For this project I happily employed the talents of Dan Ionescu on guitar and Norman Guilbault on bass.
The recording is entirely acoustic using an overhead room mic. I chose the tunes that I thought best exemplified that "London" sound though there is one song here that she never recorded: Route 66. I included it because it was written by her beloved late husband Bobby Troup on whose birthday she passed away.
