With the latest in hi-fi acoustic recording, the Montreal-based Fidelio label’s first release is of veteran guitarist Art Johnson and local double bass wonderkind Frederic Alarie. The duo slalom through a set of smoky standards. Yes the sound is very acoustic friendly, but the magic sparks between the two players (brought together by Radio-Canada’s Chantal Jolis) this product needs no expiry date. Alarie and Johnson obviously enjoy tearing up Willow Weep For Me, Lover Man and the likes. The material, musicians and technologies come together here in grand form. There’s plenty of room for the listener in this hot tub of talent. As for solos, Alarie goes the distance in Turbulence, as does Johnson in Easy Living. (Dean Cotrill - Hour) |
